Clerk to the Governors

We are looking to appoint a Clerk to Governors for our small, friendly and effective primary school on the edge of Cambridge.

The post involves flexible working hours that are predominantly based at home but with the expectation to come into school for meetings that are not held virtually. Currently there are three meetings a term, lasting two hours each. These are held in the early evening. Other tasks assigned to the role are dependent on deadlines.  A self-motivated individual, will enjoy the autonomy this brings.

The role is varied and will include a range of tasks some of which include:

  • preparing agendas for the Full Governing Body meetings in consultation with the Headteacher and the Chair of Governors

  • taking accurate minutes at the meetings and ensuring that all supporting paperwork is distributed and filed accordingly

  • carrying out the statutory requirements of the role regarding Governing Body membership

  • providing procedural guidance

The successful candidate will have experience of clerking or a similar administration role. This post comes with training and development opportunities. In addition, there will be a comprehensive induction package too.

Our outgoing clerk has shared her experience of this role, she states:

“The role of clerk provides an interesting insight into how schools work 'behind the scenes' and how the continuous process of school improvement happens with the ultimate aim of improving outcomes for the children in our schools.  The clerk is a vital part of this process by managing the work of the governors throughout the annual cycle.

It is a role that aligns with and develops the skills of an experienced administrator.  Connecting with the wider world of education governance and legislation is vital so that the clerk can keep governors up to speed on this often rapidly changing sector.

Orchard Park will support you in getting to grips with the role and your ongoing development.  I had little or no experience when I started in post, and have now been a serving clerk for almost 10 years.   Clerks are always in demand so this role can provide opportunities to work for a number of settings”
