Art and Design at Orchard Park Community Primary School

At Orchard Park, we believe that every child is creative. Our Art and Design curriculum gives children the chance to express themselves, explore new ideas, and enjoy being creative in lots of different ways.

Intent – What are we aiming for?

At Orchard Park, our Art and Design curriculum encourages all children to express themselves and explore their creativity. Art helps children communicate their thoughts, feelings and interests in a unique way.

Through art, children learn that it can be used in many different ways – to show emotions, share opinions (even political ones), or tell a story. We want our pupils to be inspired and confident to create their own individual artistic style.

As children move through the school, they build the knowledge and skills to explore a range of tools, materials and techniques. They also learn about a wide variety of artists – male and female, from different cultures, time periods, and backgrounds, including local and up-and-coming artists.

This helps children develop an understanding of their own cultural background and how it connects to the wider world.

Implementation – How do we teach Art?

Art is taught throughout the year as part of our wider curriculum. Lessons are planned carefully to build on skills and knowledge year after year.

Teachers assess pupils regularly to make sure learning is right for their age and ability, and to support and challenge them when needed. In Reception (EYFS), children are assessed using the ‘2Simple’ app, looking at how they explore materials and use their imagination.

Children become confident using a variety of art resources and materials, and are encouraged to be independent in their choices.

Our curriculum is carefully sequenced, so that by the end of each key stage, children are expected to know, understand and apply key artistic techniques and skills, in line with our progression map.

Impact – What do children achieve?

Children at Orchard Park love Art. They are excited to try new things, use what they’ve already learned, and enjoy exploring their creativity.

They develop a ‘have a go’ attitude and confidently choose materials and techniques that suit their ideas. Children are naturally curious about Art and ask thoughtful questions, helping themselves and others deepen their understanding.

We know our Art curriculum is working well because we can see:

  • High-quality work being produced

  • Pupils showing enjoyment and pride in their learning

  • Clear progress in skills and understanding through assessments, pupil feedback and their artwork

Art makes a lasting impact on our pupils, helping them grow as confident, creative individuals throughout their time at Orchard Park.
