Towards the end of Year 1, children will take part in a Phonics Screening Check. This is a short, statutory assessment for Year 1 pupils in England designed to confirm if they have learned phonic decoding to an age-appropriate standard. It involves reading 40 words (a mix of 20 real and 20 pseudo/“alien” words) one-on-one with a teacher to assess their ability to blend sounds. The check identifies students needing extra support and ensures consistent, high-quality phonics teaching. If a child does not meet the standard in Year 1, they will re-sit the check in Year 2.
